Our History
Calafata Construction & Electric, Inc was started in 2004 by Wes Calafata, Robin Calafata, and Sean Sedgwick. Wes, Robin, and Sean were all childhood friends that grew up in San Diego and got into the construction industry in 1994. Wes and Sean started by working on a summer construction crew at Clairemont High School that paired students interested in summer work with local construction advisers to handle tasks like fixing lockers, painting the gymnasium, and building fences around various parts of the campus. After high school Wes and Sean got hired as electrician apprentices for Johnnie West Electric, a long standing Veteran owned electrical company with deep roots in the PB area, while Robin got her degree from UCSD and learned book keeping and accounting working with a local insurance agent. After studying the electrical craft under a true Master Electrician, Wes Calafata took his electrical contractors test and got his C-10 license in 2002. Then in 2004 Wes took his General Contractors License and asked Sean if he wanted to help him and Robin start their own company, with Wes and Sean in the field and Robin taking care of billing and accounting. Taking the years of knowledge and experience, and combing them with a customer oriented approach to building, Robin, Sean, and Wes have been able to grow a company that is based on doing the right thing, even if it’s not the most profitable thing.

Our growth and survival during 2008 – 2010, when most construction companies were going under, was due to our commitment to doing the right thing. We’ve never spent a dime on advertising and if you’re here then someone recommended us. We’re also a firm believer that actions speak louder than words, give us a chance to earn your business and I’m confident you’ll love the entire building process.

Wes Calafata, CEO
I have lived all 40 years of my life right here in San Diego. Graduated From Clairemont High School, Did 3 Years at Mesa College when I figured that I “Just needed to get to work” I then started in the electrical field as an apprentice. After 5 years “on the job” doing everything from whole house rewires to Christmas lights on the Crystal Pier decided I needed to learn more about the industry as a whole, so I jumped from there to a General Construction Company. From that point, the world of construction opened way up. I would go from tiling a bathroom in the morning to framing a roof in the afternoon. After getting my electrical and general contracting licenses I teamed up with my life long friend Sean Sedgwick and we opened Calafata Construction & Electric Inc.

My Grandfather always used to tell me, “There’s two ways to do anything, the easy way and the right way.” I have used this as my motto to guide me my entire life. Whether it’s playing goalie in my ice hockey league, building a house, or raising my family; I remember my grandfather’s words. Wes and I built a company that reflects the values we were raised with and we want our customers to have that same experience of excellence whenever they interact with us. The majority of our crew we’ve known since grade school and are people that share in our vision of being part of a team. A team that takes satisfaction in helping people take their construction projects and ideas from concept to reality.
